Cycling capers
Cycling capers around Kehl and Strasbourg
Thirty minutes to the foot of the cathedral in Strasbourg or ten minutes to the middle of the alluvial forest? The bicycle is the ideal means of transport to explore Kehl and the surrounding area.
Take a cycle tour on the circular routes in the region and enjoy the perfect picture-postcard beauty of unspoilt nature, picturesque villages and traditional restaurants.
Strasbourg by bicycle
It is only 6 to 7km from the centre of Kehl to the historic centre of Strasbourg. This journey takes about 30 minutes by bicycle. Cyclists going from Kehl to Strasbourg have a choice of two bridges to cross the Rhine, either the Passerelle des Deux Rives pedestrian bridge or the Beatus-Rhenanus bridge which is also used for the tram to Strasbourg.
With more than 600km of cycle paths, cycling is the ideal way to explore the city of Strasbourg. It is easy to cross the city from one end to the other on the paths along the river Ill or along the canals, and there are many opportunities for excursions.
Coming from Kehl, half a day is long enough to get to the district where the European institutions are located and to go to the Orangerie park. The route via the Botanical Garden and through the suburb of Neustadt is well served with good cycle paths for the return trip to Kehl.
Our Tip
The tram bridge is the best way to avoid the main roads as far as possible on the way to the centre of Strasbourg.
Lock your bike up and hear the beat of history in the heart of Strasbourg on foot because it is not always easy or pleasant to cycle through narrow winding streets on cobblestones trying to avoid the pedestrians. If you just want to visit the historic centre, you can opt to take the tram from Kehl.

Rhine Cycle Route (seven sections - 1.500 km)
From the Swiss border, the Rhine forms a border between France and Germany which is about 180 kilometres long. There is a signposted cycle path on both sides. On the French side, the route does not run directly along the Rhine but mainly along the Rhône-Rhine Canal to Strasbourg and then on country roads and through typical Alsatian villages. On the German side, the Rhine Cycle Route runs directly along the bank of the Rhine almost all the way from Basel to Karlsruhe.
South of Kehl the Rhine Cycle Route runs in the direction of the river through the beautiful alluvial forest. In Kehl it goes through the magnificent Garten der Zwei Ufer Two Shores Garden with its Passerelle des Deux Rives bridge. Downstream of the river Kinzig estuary, the cycle path runs on the “classic” dam on the bank to the Staustufe Rheinau-Gambsheim Rheinau-Gambsheim barrage.
