„Kehler Berge“ – Der Hafen kommt in die Stadt
Kehler Berge lautet der Titel dieser Ausstellung, die sich auf einem 1,5 km langen Ausstellungsweg erkunden lässt. An insgesamt 7 Standorten über die Stadt verteilt, zeigt die Künstlerin Gabriele Engelhardt auf insgesamt 20 See-Containern 15 großformatige Fotografien, die zwischen 2015 und 2024 im Hafen in Kehl entstanden sind.
Der Ausstellungstitel nimmt Bezug auf die gleichnamige Werkserie, die eine Verbindung von Bildhauerei und Fotografie schafft. Dabei werden Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien zu fotografischen Skulpturen. Aus bis zu 1.000 Einzelaufnahmen setzt Gabriele Engelhardt die großformatigen Bilder digital zusammen, so dass sich immer mehrere Perspektiven von ein und demselben Berg auf einem Bild vereinen. Aus der Verbindung dieser Multiperspektivität mit großer Detailschärfe erklärt sich die eindringliche Präsenz der Berge im Bild.

Die Berge im Kehler Hafen sind von Menschen aufgeschichtete Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien. Sie dienen in erster Linie der Stahl- und Papierproduktion. Diese Kehler Berge kommen aus allen Teilen der Welt (Südamerika, Asien und Europa) und sie lagern zu Haufen und Bergen geschoben im Hafen Kehl, die im Prozess des Anlieferns, Ablieferns, Weitertransportierens und Verschiebens beständig bewegt, verändert, neu gehäuft, geformt, geschichtet, verbreitert oder verschmälert, erhöht oder abgetragen werden. So entstehen täglich und auch sogar über Nacht beständig neue Hügel- und Materialformationen. Manchmal verschwinden über Nacht riesige Berge und am nächsten Tag stehen wieder neue da. Rund um den Globus werden die Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien gesammelt, verschifft, aufgehäuft und dann wieder einem Produktionskreislauf zugeführt. Ihr jetziger Platz im Kehler Hafen ist also vorläufig und zeitlich begrenzt. Gabriele Engelhardt begleitet das Versetzen der Berge bereits seit rund zehn Jahren. Dabei hat sie eine Technik entwickelt, die den riesigen Dimensionen dieser Rohstoffberge versucht, gerecht zu werden. Aus bis zu 1000 Einzelaufnahmen tastet Sie die Bergformationen akribisch ab und modelliert und collagiert sie dann am Computer zu einer fotografischen Skulptur. Denn ihr Interesse zielt auf die
Verbindung von Bildhauerei und Fotografie ab und der damit verbundenen Fragestellung, wie sich auf einer zweidimensionalen Fläche Plastizität erzeugen lässt. "Aesthetik und Spiritualität in der Gegenwartskunst im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert“ lautet der Vortrag von Prof. Jérôme Cottin (Universität Straßburg). Er wird über die Bruchstellen und Innovationen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst sprechen. Von der Abstraktion über das Ready-Made bei Marcel Duchamp, der Arte Povera und der Street Art nimmt er über verschiedene Eckpunkte Bezug auf die Fotografien von Gabriele Engelhardt. Er spürt der spirituellen Dimension der Kehler Berge nach. Die Begrifflichkeiten kreisen um den verherrlichten Abfall, der Metapher des Berges, der Verbindung von Vielfalt und Einheit und der Verantwortung des Menschen für Natur
und Umwelt. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung gibt es im Anschluss die Möglichkeit mit allen Beteiligten ins Gespräch zu kommen. Für das leibliche Wohl ist in Form eines Imbisses gesorgt.

Les montagnes du port de Kehl sont constituées de matières premières et de matériaux recyclés empilés par l'homme. Elles servent principalement à la production d'acier et de papier. Ces montagnes de Kehl proviennent des quatre coins du monde (Amérique du Sud, Asie et Europe) et sont stockées en tas et en montagnes dans le port de Kehl, où elles sont constamment déplacées, modifiées, réempilées, remodelées, stratifiées, élargies ou rétrécies, surélevées ou rabaissées au cours du processus de livraison, de déchargement, de transport et de déplacement. Ainsi, chaque jour et même chaque nuit, de nouvelles formations de montagnes et de matériaux apparaissent. Parfois, d'énormes montagnes disparaissent pendant la nuit et le lendemain, de nouvelles apparaissent. Partout dans le monde, les matières premières et les matériaux recyclables sont collectés, expédiés, empilés, puis réintroduits dans un cycle de production. Leur emplacement actuel dans le port de Kehl est provisoire.Gabriele Engelhardt accompagne le déplacement des montagnes depuis environ dix ans déjà. Elle a développé une technique qui tente de rendre justice aux dimensions gigantesques de ces montagnes de matières premières. À partir de jusqu'à 1 000 clichés individuels, elle scanne méticuleusement les formations montagneuses, puis les modélise et les assemble sur ordinateur pour créer une sculpture photographique. Son intérêt porte en effet sur le lien entre la sculpture et la photographie et sur la question connexe de savoir comment créer de la plasticité sur une surface bidimensionnelle. « Esthétique et spiritualité dans l'art contemporain aux XXe et XXIe siècles » est le titre de la conférence du professeur Jérôme Cottin (Université de Strasbourg). Il parlera des ruptures et des innovations dans l'art contemporain. De l'abstraction au ready-made de Marcel Duchamp, en passant par l'Arte Povera et le street art, il fera référence aux photographies de Gabriele Engelhardt à travers différents points clés. Il explorera la dimension spirituelle des montagnes de Kehl. Les concepts abordés tournent autour des déchets glorifiés, de la métaphore de la montagne, du lien entre diversité et unité et de la responsabilité de l'homme envers la nature et l'environnement.À l'issue de la manifestation, il sera possible de discuter avec tous les participants. Une collation sera servie.

Le titre de l'exposition fait référence à la série d'œuvres du même nom, qui crée un lien entre la sculpture et la photographie. Les matières premières et les matériaux recyclés deviennent ainsi des sculptures photographiques. Gabriele Engelhardt assemble numériquement les images grand format à partir de jusqu'à 1 000 clichés individuels, de sorte que plusieurs perspectives d'une même montagne sont toujours réunies sur une seule image. La combinaison de cette multiperspectivité et d'une grande netteté des détails explique la présence saisissante des montagnes dans l'image.
On trouve des montagnes de ferraille dans le port de Kehl. Près de 3 millions de tonnes y ont été transbordées l'année dernière. Ces matériaux recyclables importants sont acheminés vers l'aciérie, qui les transforme en acier de haute qualité en seulement quatre heures. Acier à béton et fil machine : voilà ce qu'est l'acier de Kehl. Les scories de four électrique peuvent également être réutilisées et sont employées dans la construction routière.

Im Hafen in Kehl lässt sich bergeweise Schrott finden. Knapp 3 Millionen Tonnen wurden dort im letzten Jahr umgeschlagen. Dieses wichtige Recyclingmaterial wird dem Stahlwerk zugeführt, das daraus innerhalb von nur vier Stunden qualitativ hochwertigen Stahl produziert. Betonstahl und Walzdraht – das ist der Stahl aus Kehl. Auch die Elektroofenschlacke kann wiederverwendet werden und kommt im Straßenbau zum Einsatz.
Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Hafen Kehl, der Stadt Kehl, der Wirtschaftsförderung und dem Stadtmarketing sowie der Künstlerin Gabriele Engelhardt. Kehler Berge is the title of this exhibition, which can be explored along a 1.5 km exhibition trail. Raw materials, recycled materials, bulk goods – there are mountains of them in Kehl harbour. They are useful and important for industry. And they are inspiring. Internationally renowned artist Gabriele Engelhardt recognised this special feature and has been fascinated by the abundance and variety of materials ever since. Over a period of ten years, the ‘Kehler Berge’ series of works was created between 2015 and 2024 in the Rhine port of Kehl.
In keeping with the harbour setting – namely on 20-foot sea containers – the Kehler Berge can now be found at seven locations in the city centre. They form a 1.5 km long exhibition trail. Anyone who walks it will realise that sculpture and photography can be combined. Raw materials and recycled materials have the potential to become photographic sculptures. 1,000 individual photographs per mountain is a large number – and they create seemingly endless perspectives of one and the same mountain. Multi-perspectivity meets sharp detail. A love of raw materials meets talent and artistic ambition. The harbour meets the city – and art meets people.

L'artiste de renommée internationale Gabriele Engelhardt a reconnu cette particularité et est fascinée depuis de nombreuses années par la richesse et la quantité des différents matériaux.
Les Kehler Berge, qui ont vu le jour en 2016 avec une exposition sur le mur de la gare de Kehl, ont migré ces dernières années vers de nombreux lieux d'exposition et musées. Cela a conduit à ce que les montagnes de Kehl soient désormais également très appréciées ailleurs : en 2024, elles ont été exposées à la Kunsthalle de Krems (Autriche), à la Staatsgalerie de Stuttgart et à la Pfalzgalerie de Kaiserslautern. Die international renommierte Künstlerin Gabriele Engelhardt erkannte diese Besonderheit und ist seit vielen Jahren fasziniert von der Fülle und Menge an unterschiedlichen Materialien.
Die Kehler Berge, die ihren Anfang im Jahr 2016 mit einer Ausstellung an der Bahnhofswand in Kehl genommen haben, sind in den letzten Jahren an viele unterschiedliche Ausstellungsorte und in zahlreiche Museen gewandert. Das führte dazu, dass man mittlerweile die Kehler Berge auch an anderer Stelle sehr schätzt: 2024 waren sie in der Kunsthalle in Krems (Österreich), in der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart und in der Pfalzgalerie in Kaiserslautern zu sehen. Im Herbst 2024 sind sie in der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden zu sehen. Ein weiteres Highlight ist die Ausstellung der Kehler Berge in Paris bei der renommierten Biennale de l’Image Tangible.
„Hafengerecht“ werden die Fotografien in der Kehler Innenstadt auf 20-Fuß-See-Containern präsentiert. Ein rund 1,5 km langer Ausstellungweg führt an 7 Standorte in die Kehler Innenstadt. Wer ihn geht, darf erkennen: Bildhauerei und Fotografie können verbunden werden. Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien haben das Potenzial zu fotografischen Skulpturen. 1.000 Einzelaufnahmen pro Berg sind eine große Menge – und sie schaffen unendlich anmutende Perspektiven von ein und demselben Berg. Internationally renowned artist Gabriele Engelhardt recognised this special feature and has been fascinated by the abundance and variety of materials for many years.
The Kehler Berge, which began in 2016 with an exhibition on the wall of the railway station in Kehl, have travelled to many different exhibition venues and numerous museums in recent years. As a result, the Kehler Berge are now also highly regarded elsewhere: in 2024, they were on display at the Kunsthalle in Krems (Austria), the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Pfalzgalerie in Kaiserslautern. In autumn 2024, they will be on display at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. Another highlight is the exhibition of the Kehler Berge in Paris at the renowned Biennale de l'Image Tangible.
The photographs are presented in Kehl city centre on 20-foot shipping containers, in keeping with the port theme. An approximately 1.5 km long exhibition trail leads to seven locations in Kehl city centre. Visitors to the trail will discover that sculpture and photography can be combined. Raw materials and recycled materials have the potential to become photographic sculptures. 1,000 individual photographs per mountain is a large number – and they create seemingly endless perspectives of one and the same mountain. L'artiste de renommée internationale Gabriele Engelhardt a reconnu cette particularité et est depuis toujours fascinée par la richesse et la quantité des différents matériaux. Cela l'a inspirée pour réaliser des photographies très particulières de ces « montagnes de Kehl ».
On peut observer chaque jour sur place que les employés du port sont capables de déplacer des montagnes. Du jour au lendemain, les énormes montagnes de marchandises en vrac disparaissent et peu de temps après, de nouvelles apparaissent. Le port de Kehl vit en grande partie de son expertise en matière de transbordement. Outre les marchandises en vrac, le port dispose de son propre terminal à conteneurs, où de nouveaux conteneurs arrivent presque quotidiennement et d'autres sont rechargés. Tout est en mouvement et soumis à des changements constants. Pantha rhei – tout est en flux.
Les photographies sont présentées dans le centre-ville sur des conteneurs maritimes de 20 pieds, comme il se doit dans un port. Un parcours d'exposition d'environ 1,5 km mène à travers le centre-ville de Kehl, avec 7 sites à découvrir. Une grande partie de cette diversité matérielle est destinée à la production d'acier dans le port de Kehl et provient de divers endroits où elle est débarquée par bateau. De nombreux matériaux proviennent de la Forêt-Noire, d'autres encore arrivent au port de Kehl en provenance du Mexique, de Chine, du Brésil et de Colombie. Des milliards de particules ont probablement parcouru la moitié du globe avant d'arriver dans la Kehler Hafenstraße. Beaucoup sont exposés à l'air libre, d'autres doivent être protégés de l'érosion. C'est un monde à part entière, dont on peut désormais se faire une idée grâce à l'exposition en plein air.

L'artiste de renommée internationale Gabriele Engelhardt a reconnu cette particularité et est fascinée depuis de nombreuses années par la richesse et la quantité des différents matériaux, ce qui a donné lieu à une série très particulière de ses travaux photographiques : les « Kehler Berge » (Les montagnes de Kehl).
Plus la ferraille est triée, plus elle a de la valeur. Pour qu'elle puisse renaitre à une nouvelle vie, elle doit d'abord être examinée, testée, puis triée méticuleusement. Même les énormes montagnes de ferraille du port de Kehl sont soumises à un contrôle qualité strict. Les matériaux potentiellement radioactifs, les réservoirs sous pression, les batteries : tout doit être trié avant de pouvoir être acheminé vers l'usine sidérurgique Badischen Stahlwerke pour y être traité. La montagne de rails a été livrée déjà triée par type, ce qui est une chance inouïe !

Schrott ist umso wertvoller, je sortenreiner er ist. Damit er wieder zu neuem Leben erweckt werden kann, muss er im Vorfeld zunächst untersucht, getestet und dann akribisch sortiert werden. Auch die riesigen Schrottberge im Kehler Hafen unterlaufen einer strengen Qualitätskontrolle. Mögliches radioaktives Material, Druckbehälter, Batterien – alles muss vorher aussortiert werden, bevor es zur Verarbeitung in die Badischen Stahlwerke weitergehen kann. Der Schienenberg wurde bereits sortenrein angeliefert – sozusagen ein Glücksfall!
„Hafengerecht“ werden die Fotografien in der Innenstadt auf 20-Fuß-See-Containern präsentiert. Ein rund 1,5 km langer Ausstellungweg führt an 7 Standorten entlang durch die Kehler Innenstadt. Wer ihn geht, darf erkennen: Bildhauerei und Fotografie können verbunden werden. Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien haben das Potenzial zu fotografischen Skulpturen. 1.000 Einzelaufnahmen pro Berg sind eine große Menge – und sie schaffen unendlich anmutende Perspektiven von ein und demselben Berg. Raw materials, recycled materials, bulk goods – there are mountains of them in the port of Kehl. They are useful and important for industry. And they are inspiring. Internationally renowned artist Gabriele Engelhardt recognised this special feature and has been fascinated for many years by the abundance and quantity of different materials, which has resulted in a very special series of her photographic works: the ‘Kehler Berge’ (Kehl Mountains).
The purer the scrap metal is, the more valuable it is. In order for it to be brought back to life, it must first be examined, tested and then meticulously sorted. The huge mountains of scrap metal in the port of Kehl are also subject to strict quality control. Potentially radioactive material, pressure vessels, batteries – everything must be sorted out beforehand before it can be sent on to the Badische Stahlwerke steelworks for processing. The mountain of rails was already delivered sorted by type – a stroke of luck, so to speak!
The photographs are presented in the city centre on 20-foot shipping containers, in keeping with the harbour theme. An approximately 1.5 km long exhibition trail leads through seven locations in Kehl's city centre. Visitors to the trail will discover that sculpture and photography can be combined. Raw materials and recycled materials have the potential to become photographic sculptures. 1,000 individual photographs per mountain is a large number – and they create seemingly endless perspectives of one and the same mountain. Matières premières, matériaux recyclés, marchandises en vrac : ils s'accumulent par montagnes dans le port de Kehl. Ils sont utiles et importants pour l'industrie. Et ils sont source d'inspiration. L'artiste de renommée internationale Gabriele Engelhardt a reconnu cette particularité et est fascinée depuis de nombreuses années par la richesse et la quantité des différents matériaux, ce qui a donné lieu à une série très particulière de ses travaux photographiques : les « Kehler Berge ».
À la fin du Moyen Âge, les plis étaient une caractéristique marquante de l'art : ils ornaient les vêtements des personnages dans la peinture et la sculpture. Des lignes dynamiques créaient un effet plastique. Ces plis artistiquement disposés donnaient aux personnages une apparence tridimensionnelle et étaient utilisés pour représenter le mouvement et les émotions. Il est intéressant de noter que l'on trouve également des plis sur les montagnes de Kehl. En effet, le silicium-manganèse contient des composants hydrosolubles, il doit donc être protégé de la pluie. Les bâches de camions usagées sont très utiles à cet effet, mais elles forment des plis. Le silicium et le manganèse sont des éléments d'alliage importants dans la fabrication de l'acier et contribuent à améliorer ses propriétés mécaniques. Le manganèse est important pour éliminer les éléments nocifs tels que l'oxygène et le soufre et pour augmenter la dureté, la résistance et la ténacité de l'acier.
Les photographies de Gabriele Engelhardt sont présentées dans le centre-ville sur des conteneurs maritimes de 20 pieds, « adaptés au port ». Un parcours d'exposition d'environ 1,5 km mène à travers le centre-ville de Kehl, passant par 7 sites. Diese kunstvoll arrangierten Falten gaben Figuren eine dreidimensionale Anmutung und sie wurden als Mittel zur Darstellung von Bewegung und Gefühl eingesetzt. Falten gibt es interessanterweise auch auf den Kehler Bergen. Denn: Silizium-Mangan beinhaltet wasserlösliche Teile, deshalb muss es vor Regen geschützt werden. Ausgediente LKW-Planen leisten dabei gute Dienste – und werfen nun einmal auch Falten. Silizium als auch Mangan sind wichtige Legierungselemente bei der Stahlherstellung und tragen zur Verbesserung der mechanischen Eigenschaften des Stahls bei. Mangan ist wichtig, um schädliche Elemente wie Sauerstoff und Schwefel zu entfernen und die Härte, Festigkeit sowie Zähigkeit des Stahls zu erhöhen.

Internationally renowned artist Gabriele Engelhardt recognised this special feature and has been fascinated by the abundance and variety of different materials for many years, which has resulted in a very special series of photographic works: the ‘Kehler Berge’ (Kehl Mountains).
In the late Middle Ages, drapery was a striking feature in art – it characterised the garments of figures in painting and sculpture. Sweeping lines created a three-dimensional effect. These artfully arranged folds gave figures a three-dimensional appearance and were used as a means of depicting movement and emotion. Interestingly, folds can also be found on the Kehler Mountains. This is because silicon manganese contains water-soluble components, which means it must be protected from rain. Disused lorry tarpaulins serve this purpose well – and happen to form folds. Both silicon and manganese are important alloying elements in steel production and contribute to improving the mechanical properties of steel. Manganese is important for removing harmful elements such as oxygen and sulphur and increasing the hardness, strength and toughness of steel.

L'année dernière, une époque qui a marqué l'activité portuaire de Kehl pendant plusieurs décennies a pris fin : le transbordement du charbon. Il a été abandonné au cours de l'année 2024. Utilisé pendant plus d'un siècle comme source d'énergie, il a désormais été remplacé à Kehl et dans la région par des sources d'énergie respectueuses de l'environnement telles que la biomasse et l'électricité verte. Im vergangenen Jahr ging eine Ära zu Ende, die in Kehl über viele Jahrzehnte zum Hafen-Geschäft gehörte: Der Kohle-Umschlag. Er wurde im Verlauf des Jahres 2024 eingestellt. Über mehr als ein Jahrhundert war sie als Energielieferant im Einsatz – nun wurde sie in Kehl und in der Region durch umweltfreundliche Energiequellen wie Biomasse und grünen Strom ersetzt. Pantha rei – alles ist im Fluss. Eine kontinuierliche Veränderung ist der stetige Begleiter des Hafens. Dinge neu sehen und neu denken – da haben der Hafen und die Kunst Vieles gemeinsam.

Last year marked the end of an era that had been part of Kehl's port business for many decades: coal handling. It was discontinued in the course of 2024. It had been used as an energy source for more than a century – now it has been replaced in Kehl and the surrounding region by environmentally friendly energy sources such as biomass and green electricity. Pantha rei – everything flows. Continuous change is a constant companion of the port. Seeing things in a new light and thinking in new ways – the port and art have a lot in common in this respect.

La série d'œuvres « Kehler Berge » a été créée entre 2015 et 2024 dans le port rhénan de Kehl – et elle est désormais exposée dans la ville.
Les photographies sont présentées dans le centre-ville sur des conteneurs maritimes de 20 pieds, « comme il se doit dans un port ». Un parcours d'exposition d'environ 1,5 km mène à travers le centre-ville de Kehl, avec 7 sites à découvrir. Ceux qui le parcourent peuvent constater que la sculpture et la photographie peuvent être associées. Les matières premières et les matériaux recyclés ont le potentiel de devenir des sculptures photographiques. 1 000 clichés individuels par montagne, c'est beaucoup, et ils créent des perspectives infinies d'une seule et même montagne. La multiperspectivité rencontre la précision des détails. L'amour des matériaux bruts rencontre le talent et l'ambition artistique. Le port rencontre la ville, et l'art rencontre les gens.
Kehl, porte d'entrée vers la France, est une ville frontalière qui vit des échanges intenses avec son pays voisin. Le pont de l'Europe relie les deux pays, qui constituent le centre de l'Europe. Au milieu se trouve le port de Kehl, qui coopère de plus en plus étroitement avec le port de Strasbourg. Certaines montagnes de Kehl finissent en France après leur transbordement, comme les copeaux de bois, qui servent de revêtement pour une aire de jeux pour enfants et de « sol » pour un festival. Ils doivent être transportés par le Rhin. Même si celui-ci a longtemps constitué une frontière naturelle, il est aujourd'hui plutôt un élément de liaison entre les deux pays. L'exposition jette un pont particulier entre le port et l'art.
Elle est le fruit d'une étroite collaboration entre le port de Kehl, la ville de Kehl, l'agence municipale de développement économique et l'artiste Gabriele Engelhardt. Rohstoffe, Recyclingmaterialien, Schüttgut – es gibt sie bergeweise im Kehler Hafen. Sie sind nützlich und wichtig für die Industrie. Und sie sind inspirierend. Die international renommierte Künstlerin Gabriele Engelhardt erkannte diese Besonderheit und ist seit vielen Jahren fasziniert von der Fülle und Menge an unterschiedlichen Materialien. Entstanden ist die Werkserie „Kehler Berge“ zwischen 2015 und 2024 im Kehler Rheinhafen – und nun ist sie in der Stadt.
„Hafengerecht“ werden die Fotografien in der Innenstadt auf 20-Fuß-See-Containern präsentiert. Ein rund 1,5 km langer Ausstellungweg führt an 7 Standorten entlang durch die Kehler Innenstadt. Wer ihn geht, darf erkennen: Bildhauerei und Fotografie können verbunden werden. Rohstoffe und Recyclingmaterialien haben das Potenzial zu fotografischen Skulpturen. 1.000 Einzelaufnahmen pro Berg sind eine große Menge – und sie schaffen unendlich anmutende Perspektiven von ein und demselben Berg. Multiperspektivität trifft dabei auf Detailschärfe. Liebe zu rohen Materialien trifft auf Talent und künstlerische Ambitioniertheit. Hafen trifft Stadt – und Kunst trifft Menschen.
Kehl als Tor zu Frankreich lebt als Grenzstadt von dem regen Austausch mit dem Nachbarland. Die Europabrücke verbindet die beiden Länder miteinander, und diese bilden das Zentrum Europas. Mittendrin liegt der Kehler Hafen, der kontinuierlich enger mit dem Hafen Straßburg kooperiert. Manche Kehler Berge landen nach dem Umschlag in Frankreich – so auch Hackschnitzel, die sich als Belag für einen Kinderspielplatz und als „Boden“ für ein Festival eignen. Sie müssen dabei über den Rhein transportiert werden. Auch wenn dieser lange Zeit eine natürliche Grenze darstellte, ist er heute eher ein Element der Verbindung der beiden Länder. Mit der Ausstellung wird eine Brücke der besonderen Art zwischen Hafen und Kunst geschlagen.
Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Hafen Kehl, der Stadt Kehl, der städtischen Wirtschaftsförderung und der Künstlerin Gabriele Engelhardt. Sie findet im Rahmen des 125-jährigen Bestehens des Hafens statt und wird freundlicherweise von Sponsoren aus Wirtschaft und Industrie in Kehl und Umgebung unterstützt.

The harbour comes to town – art in Kehl city centre

Raw materials, recycled materials, bulk goods – there are mountains of them in Kehl harbour. They are useful and important for industry. And they are inspiring. Internationally renowned artist Gabriele Engelhardt recognised this special feature and has been fascinated by the abundance and variety of materials for many years. The series of works entitled ‘Kehler Berge’ was created between 2015 and 2024 in Kehl's Rhine harbour – and now it is in the city.
In keeping with the harbour theme, the photographs are presented in the city centre on 20-foot shipping containers. An approximately 1.5 km long exhibition trail leads through seven locations in Kehl city centre. Anyone who walks it will see that sculpture and photography can be combined. Raw materials and recycled materials have the potential to become photographic sculptures. 1,000 individual photographs per mountain is a large number – and they create seemingly endless perspectives of one and the same mountain. Multi-perspectivity meets sharp detail. A love of raw materials meets talent and artistic ambition. The harbour meets the city – and art meets people.
As the gateway to France, Kehl thrives as a border town thanks to its lively exchange with its neighbour. The Europe Bridge connects the two countries, which form the centre of Europe. Right in the middle lies the port of Kehl, which is working ever more closely with the port of Strasbourg. Some of Kehl's mountains end up in France after being transshipped – including wood chips, which are suitable as surfacing for a children's playground and as ‘ground’ for a festival. They have to be transported across the Rhine. Although this river was a natural border for a long time, today it is more of an element connecting the two countries. The exhibition builds a special kind of bridge between the port and art.
The exhibition is the result of close cooperation between the Port of Kehl, the City of Kehl, the municipal economic development agency and the artist Gabriele Engelhardt.
